Stress and Outstanding Performance

Today is Wednesday, so this post is on outstanding performance.

Outstanding performers have three things in common:

  1. Outstanding performers are technically competent.  They remain technically competent because they are lifelong learners.
  2. Outstanding performers set and achieve goals.
  3. Outstanding performers are organized.  They manage their time, stress and lifestyle well.

Recently, I was clearing out some old files and I came across the material from a stress management seminar I did over 15 years ago.  One of the pages listed the difference between proactive stress management and passive stress victimization.  In this holiday season, when stress seems more acute, I thought I’d post those thoughts here.

Passive Stress Victims:

  • Leave many things to chance and fate.
  • Don’t think ahead.
  • Don’t anticipate possible outcomes.
  • Meet deadlines by last minute cramming.
  • Accept tasks that cannot be completely successfully.
  • Do not set clear priorities.
  • Let problems accumulate.
  • See their environment as threatening.
  • Do not pace themselves well.
  • Work alone, don’t ask for help.

Proactive Stress Managers:

  • Identify their priorities and focus on them.
  • Put their energy into tasks that will yield real results.
  • Take the time to evaluate alternative courses of action.
  • Anticipate and plan for the future.
  • Reserve some time everyday to handle unexpected and unplanned crisis events.
  • Have a realistic view of the threats in their environment.
  • Take care of their health, exercise and eat right.
  • Engage in relaxation exercises when they feel themselves getting too stressed.
  • Ask for help when they need it.

I hope you found this quick look at stress management to be helpful.  It helped me center myself as I am making my year end push to get things done.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for reading.  Log on to my website www.BudBilanich.com for more common sense.  Check out my other blog: www.CommonSenseGuy.com for common sense advice on leadership and running a small business and to get an ebook version of my book 4 Secrets of High Performing Organizations.

I’ll see you around the web, and at Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
