Josh Hinds writes a great ezine called Get Motivation www.GetMotivation.com. In a recent issue, he had a guest column by Zig Ziglar, sales guru. This is what Zig has to say about planning and success.
“When you plan and prepare carefully, you can legitimately expect to have success in your efforts. When you plan and prepare to make a sale, for example, you can legitimately expect to make a sale. Although not all your expectations are going to come to pass, you give yourself an infinitely better chance of succeeding by taking the proper steps.
“Regardless of your goal--losing weight, making more sales, furthering your education, earning a promotion, saving money for a new home or an exotic vacation--you can expect to achieve your goal if you plan and prepare for it.”
I agree. Goals are important – but you must develop a plan for how you are going to achieve your goals if you want to be successful. Bob Pfander was my boss about 30 years ago. Something that he said then still resonates with me today; “Plan your work and then work your plan.”
That’s how I approach my work and life. I first decide what I want to achieve, and then I develop a plan for getting there. There is a lot of common sense here.
Goals can be overwhelming. A big goal can paralyze some people into inaction. Planning allows you to break down your goals into manageable chunks. Accomplishing one small manageable chunk after another keeps you moving forward. Eventually, you’ll reach your goal.
If it weren’t for planning, I would never have written any of my books.
The common sense point today comes from my old boss, Bob. Plan your work and work your plan.
