Create Your Own Home Field Advantage

Today is Monday, so this post is on self confidence.

If you live in the US, and are a sports fan, October is a good month.  College and professional football are in full swing, professional hockey has begun, professional basketball is in its exhibition season, Major League Soccer is at the end of its season and the playoffs are looming.  Major League Baseball’s World Series (a peculiarly named event, as it includes only teams from North America) is the most important sporting event to occur in October.

I am a sports fan, and I watched quite a bit of sports this past weekend.  As I watched, I was struck by the importance of home field advantage.  It’s easier to win when you have a lot of supporters cheering you on.  You might be wondering what home field advantage in sports has to do with self confidence and career and life success.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, self confident people have three things in common.

  1. Self confident people are optimistic.
  2. Self confident people face their fears and deal with them.
  3. Self confident people surround themselves with positive people.

Surrounding yourself with positive people helps you create your own home field advantage.  Positive people, the ones who see the potential upside in things, are the ones you want on your side.  Just being around positive people will help you when you are feeling low and things aren’t going the way you would like.

And while positive people will help your self confidence, negative ones are a drain on it.  Avoid negative people like the plague.  Almost all of us know one or two people who are like the Saturday Night Live Character “Debby Downer”.  I suggest that you identify the Debby Downers in your life and move away from them.  Avoid them completely, or spend as little time as possible with them.

Negative people are contagious.  Their negativity can be like a black hole that sucks you in.  Positive people can be contagious too.  If you surround yourself with positive people, you can will find that you will become more optimistic and self confident.

The common sense point for today is simple.  Avoid negative people.  Build you own home field advantage by actively seeking out and associating with positive people.  If you do, you’ll become more self confident.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for reading.  Log on to my website www.BudBilanich.com for more common sense.  Check out my other blog: www.CommonSenseGuy.com for common sense advice on leading people and running a small business.

I’ll see you around the web, and at Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
