Goals are the Key to Outstanding Performance

Today is Wednesday, so this post is on outstanding performance.

Technical excellence, setting and achieving high goals and personal organization are the keys to outstanding performance.  In this post, I’d like to give you my best common sense advice on setting and achieving goals.

Write your goals.  Goals are just wishes if you haven’t written them down.  Writing your goals is the best way to develop the energy you need to do the hard work it will take to meet them.

Make your goals S.M.A.R.T.  S.M.A.R.T. goals are:

  • Specific – they deal with one and only one outcome.
  • Measurable – you can easily tell if you’ve met them or not.
  • Achievable – good goals stretch you, but they are also based on reality.  Unachievable goals will demoralize you.
  • Result Oriented – they focus on an outcome, not an activity that may or may not get you to your desired outcome.
  • Time Bound – when you set a deadline, you are creating some pressure for yourself to achieve your goals.  Deadlines motivate you to do what’s necessary to reach your goals.

Plan you work.  Most goals will require that you take and successfully complete a number of actions.  Start by listing all the actions you’ll need to complete to reach your goal.  Then organize these actions in a logical sequence.

Get to work.  Begin at the top of your list and complete each action step.  Do something on one of more of your goals everyday.  You’ll build the momentum you need to keep moving forward and accomplishing your goals.  This takes discipline – but it’s worth it.

These four simple, common sense steps are the best way I know to set and achieve high goals – and to become an outstanding performer.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for reading.  Log on to my website www.BudBilanich.com to subscribe to my monthly ezine and for more common sense.  Check out my other blog: www.CommonSenseGuy.com for common sense advice on leading people and running a small business.

I’ll see you around the web, and at Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
