Today is Tuesday, so this post is on positive personal impact.
Today, some random thoughts on positive personal impact…
Relax. People are attracted to those who are calm. Even if you are stressed, try not to show it. People don’t form good impressions of you when you always appear to be stressed out.
Stand up straight and smile. People respond well to those with good posture. My friend, Debra Benton, suggests thinking “Cheese Whiz” when you meet someone – this will help you keep a smile on your face.
Act as if you belong. Treat people – no matter what their status -- as equals. Be respectful of people and their positions, but don’t grovel. If you act as if you belong, people will treat you as if you belong.
Treat people with care and consideration. Make everyone you meet feel special. Ask about them. Focus on them when they are speaking. Listen to what they say. Make eye contact, nod to show you understand what they are saying.
Use people’s names. People like to hear their names. Here’s a personal example. I went to Penn State. Joe Paterno is the legendary football coach there. I happened to meet him one day on the street in New York. I introduced myself and told him I was in the class of 1972. We chatted for a few minutes. He began almost every sentence with “Bud”. I liked Joe before we met, I really liked him after a five minute conversation on the street in New York.
Match your gestures and body language to your speech. If you are excited about something, let it show. Don't fail your arms wildly, but let others see your excitement and passion.
Be in touch with your emotions. The more you understand what you are feeling, the more authentic you seem to others. No one likes a phony. Be willing to own your feelings and show them.
That’s it for today. Thanks for reading. Log on to my website www.BudBilanich.com for more common sense. Check out my other blog: www.CommonSenseGuy.com for common sense advice on leading people and running a small business.
I’ll see you around the web, and at Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
